Zombies, Trains and more Trains [Review of Train to Busan]

Train to Busan exemplifies how a genre film should be, pushing itself to the limits instead of resorting to usual cliches and gimmicks for cheap thrills. The film masterfully, if not flawlessly, utilized all of its elements (CGI, Setting, Story, Acting, Scoring, Zombies and etc) and combined them in a way such that it breaks new ground without becoming too unfamiliar for the audiences to enjoy it.

Though at times it may seem repetitive or unsure of its goals, it has nevertheless closed the film wonderfully and redeemed it's trivial hiccups (just nitpicking here).

It is neither pretentious nor crass, it is a perfect example of how Cinema should be done and aspired for. It all boils down to the story and the telling of that story in the most personal way that you can. It is something that the Asian Film Community could be truly proud of!

My favorite scene was when Yong-Suk (The Guy everybody hated) turned into a zombie and asked for Seok-Woo's (The Guy everybody calls Papi) converses with him for a while. The film humanized this character who was doomed to become a caricature for the "villainous asshole" type of guys. Yong-Suk, asking for help, wanting to go home to his waiting mother at Busan...it is heartbreaking, but it is these kinds of scenes that makes the film worth reviewing.

It is truly a wonderfully horrific piece of work!
